The London and Southampton Railway was first proposed in 1831 and the bill approved by Parliament in 1834 at a cost of £900,000. The section between Basingstoke and Winchester opened on 11 May 1840 – and was the final part of the London and Southampton Railway to be completed. Prior to its construction, all of the traffic between London and Southampton was carried by eight stage coaches, four wagons per week, and one barge weekly on the Basingstoke Canal!

Hawthorn Close

Hawthorn Close - Road Sign
The development was built in 1964 and was nicknamed 'Capitalist Close' or 'Millionaire's Road'. This area had previously been allotments.
John Trimmer bought the Hawthorn Close site from Harry Symes on the understanding that ten dwellings could be built along the road. When the Council insisted that the building of the 10 houses be set back with a full standard road and pavement, John reckoned it to be too expensive and sold the site on to a developer. However, John was appointed to build these 10 houses on behalf of the developer.
The original plans for the close are featured below in the picture gallery
