The London and Southampton Railway was first proposed in 1831 and the bill approved by Parliament in 1834 at a cost of £900,000. The section between Basingstoke and Winchester opened on 11 May 1840 – and was the final part of the London and Southampton Railway to be completed. Prior to its construction, all of the traffic between London and Southampton was carried by eight stage coaches, four wagons per week, and one barge weekly on the Basingstoke Canal!

Mount Cottage - 95 Winchester Road
Mount Cottage, 95 Winchester Road, formerly Mount Kestrel
Until the 1990s it was lived in by Kay Slocum, whose brother is on the War Memorial and whose other claim to fame was that it was he who flew a spitfire before the War under the Alresford Road Bridge out of Winchester leading to it being called Spitfire Bridge.
In 1997, since the photo was taken, a thatched wing was built on by the Massey Chase family
The 1920 Baring Sale shows that it was let to Mr. H W Day on a rental of £7 0s 0d and the included allotment garden was let to Mr F Hillary. Total acreage 0.544.
