The London and Southampton Railway was first proposed in 1831 and the bill approved by Parliament in 1834 at a cost of £900,000. The section between Basingstoke and Winchester opened on 11 May 1840 – and was the final part of the London and Southampton Railway to be completed. Prior to its construction, all of the traffic between London and Southampton was carried by eight stage coaches, four wagons per week, and one barge weekly on the Basingstoke Canal!

Micheldever School Classes
Class 1935
1916
This Micheldever school group was taken about 1916, and loaned to us by Mrs F Hillary of “Devonia”, Micheldever, whose husband, the late Mr Fred Hillary, is second from the left in the bottom row. His brother, the late Mr Arthur Hillary, is fourth from the left in the top row. The teacher on the extreme right, was a Mr Lawrence, who was at the school for many years. The photograph was taken outside the school, which still looks today very much the same as it did more than 50 years ago – which implies this article in the Chronicle was written about 1966.
