The London and Southampton Railway was first proposed in 1831 and the bill approved by Parliament in 1834 at a cost of £900,000. The section between Basingstoke and Winchester opened on 11 May 1840 – and was the final part of the London and Southampton Railway to be completed. Prior to its construction, all of the traffic between London and Southampton was carried by eight stage coaches, four wagons per week, and one barge weekly on the Basingstoke Canal!

The Hampshire Fair, which raises money for small local charities, has arranged for a fascinating talk on Winston Churchill entitled
“True Tales from the Churchill Archive”.
The talk will be given by Allen Packwood,
Director of the Churchill Archives Centre who will regale us with tales of all aspects of Churchill’s illustrious life – everything from his school reports, to his wartime leadership – and even to the contents of Margaret Thatcher’s handbag!
The talk will take place at 6.30 pm for 7 pm on Wednesday 18 February in the Junior School Hall at St. Swithun’s School, Alresford Road, Winchester SO21 1HA.
