The London and Southampton Railway was first proposed in 1831 and the bill approved by Parliament in 1834 at a cost of £900,000. The section between Basingstoke and Winchester opened on 11 May 1840 – and was the final part of the London and Southampton Railway to be completed. Prior to its construction, all of the traffic between London and Southampton was carried by eight stage coaches, four wagons per week, and one barge weekly on the Basingstoke Canal!

Join us for an evening of some of the greatest arias, duets, and ensembles from the world's best-known and best-loved operas, all focused on the eternal theme of love. This performance, in the beautiful octagonal nave of St Mary’s Church, Micheldever, is perfect for experienced opera-goers and newcomers alike. Featuring music from Carmen, La Boheme, La Traviata, Don Giovanni and The Marriage of Figaro, there really is something for everyone. The singers have all sung at the world's major opera houses, and this atmospheric, candle-lit performance.
Narrated by Artistic Director John Lofthouse.
Accompanied by Musical Director Robert Bottriel at the piano.
The performance (including one interval) starts at 7.30pm and will end at 9.45pm.
