The London and Southampton Railway was first proposed in 1831 and the bill approved by Parliament in 1834 at a cost of £900,000. The section between Basingstoke and Winchester opened on 11 May 1840 – and was the final part of the London and Southampton Railway to be completed. Prior to its construction, all of the traffic between London and Southampton was carried by eight stage coaches, four wagons per week, and one barge weekly on the Basingstoke Canal!

One meal, three courses, four locations
We hope you can join us for this year’s Micheldever Safari Supper
on Saturday 15 November.
The evening will start with welcome drinks at 6.30pm – a great opportunity for everyone attending to meet up in one place.
This will be followed by three delicious courses in three different homes, meeting new groups of guests every time you change location.
The cost will be £25 per person for those hosting a course at their home. If you’d like to take part, but can’t host a course, the cost will be £30 per person. Non-hosting places will be limited due to logistics.
The event will be in aid of the St Mary’s Church Fabric Fund, which currently needs to raise around £45,000 to carry out essential repairs to the church roof and gutters. Looking after our beautiful historic church is a challenge!
