The London and Southampton Railway was first proposed in 1831 and the bill approved by Parliament in 1834 at a cost of £900,000. The section between Basingstoke and Winchester opened on 11 May 1840 – and was the final part of the London and Southampton Railway to be completed. Prior to its construction, all of the traffic between London and Southampton was carried by eight stage coaches, four wagons per week, and one barge weekly on the Basingstoke Canal!

A BIG thank you to Trish and all her team who provided an amazing Christmas lunch in Micheldever Village Hall. The lunch was absolutely delicious with ample alcohol, coffee and after lunch chocolates.
The community spirit was great, and the thought and effort put into this whole event, finishing off with carol singing and a chocolate goody bag to take home, was brilliant. A real treat in these difficult times, it lifted my spirits. Thank you. There is a lunch every first Wednesday of the month, a date worth putting in the diary.
