The London and Southampton Railway was first proposed in 1831 and the bill approved by Parliament in 1834 at a cost of £900,000. The section between Basingstoke and Winchester opened on 11 May 1840 – and was the final part of the London and Southampton Railway to be completed. Prior to its construction, all of the traffic between London and Southampton was carried by eight stage coaches, four wagons per week, and one barge weekly on the Basingstoke Canal!

Summer BBQ-Lunch Club

Thank you Bill and David for manning the BBQ!
Micheldever Village Lunch held their annual BBQ Lunch at the Northbrook Hall on July 6th.
For once the weather was set fair and we were able to enjoy eating al fresco!
The 2 chefs, David Mason & Bill Finch, cooked the burgers and sausages on a BBQ kindly loaned for the occasion by Nigel Pratt.
Every seat was taken so the team of 8 ladies were kept busy, serving drinks & food, although they too were able to take a break and enjoy the meal.
The meat was accompanied by new potatoes, beetroot & homemade coleslaw. Dessert was homemade Raspberry & Almond Trifle.
The next lunch will be held on 7th September at the Northbrook Hall, when all are welcome. If you would like to be part of the team behind the scenes, please contact Tricia Patston on 01962 795028. Many hands make light work!
